AquaGen Chile builds ultra modern hatchery

Chile: By March of 2009 AquaGen Chile S.A. will introduce its first broodstock into the company’s newest (and the country’s most modern) egg production facility. With the new and extensive facility AquaGen Chile expects to produce enough eggs to meet the national demand and to also export eggs in the future.

Kate Casey

AquaGen A.S. in Norway established its branch company AquaGen Chile S.A. in the year 2000 and is one of Chile’s leading suppliers for Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout eggs. With plans in line with the current dilema surrounding disease issues and egg imports, AquaGen Chile expects to see a growing demand for their national production for the short to mid term. And according to Aqua.cl, the company has ambitions that are completely contradictory to Chile's poor reputation at present as a salmon producer. Svein Sorvik, the general manager of the company explains that the new facility has meant a US$ 12 million investment, and should reach a production capacity of 150 million eggs per year in the long term. 90% of the production will be Atlantic salmon and 10% rainbow trout. As for the potential export markets, AquaGen Chile intends to supply Atlantic salmon eggs for Europe, and trout eggs for countries such as Peru, Turkey and Iran. The production facility is entirely land based and has both recirculation and open flow systems, with multiple sanitary barriers and water purification technologies. The facility expands over 7,000 m2 and requires a staff of 30 professionals and technicians.
