Effect on metabolism in salmonidsFat digestion, transport and metabolism were elucidated in growth and isotope studies with Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout. The effects of feed ration and oil processing were minor.
Despite the fact that the effects of feed ration and oil
processing were minor, the combination of vegetable protein and oil
sources had significant effects on growth, nutrient digestion and
retention, intestinal enzymes and bile salt. A fatty acid tracer
study revealed that the pyloric caeca was the most important site
for absorption of both medium chain and long chain fatty acids in
the gastrointestinal tract.
